A Look at Winton's History
Winton was first settled by people in the year 1853. A few years later, in 1857, the town's layout was officially planned and surveyed.
For many years, the main road connecting Melbourne to Sydney, called the Hume Highway, went right through Winton. But in 1987, a new, faster road called the Hume Freeway was built. This new freeway now goes around Winton, making travel quicker for those passing by.
