Wirngir facts for kids
The Wirngir are an Aboriginal Australian group. They come from the Kimberley region in Western Australia.
Where the Wirngir Lived
The Wirngir people lived along the coast. Their land stretched about 800 square miles (2,072 square kilometers). This area was in the Kimberley region.
Their land reached from Cape Bernier. It went southeast to the lower Lyne River and Vancouver Point.
Other Aboriginal groups lived near them. The Miriwung people were to their east. The Arnga lived south and southwest. The Yeidji were to the west of their northern border.
Impact on the Wirngir Community
The Wirngir people, like other groups nearby, faced big challenges. Events in the 1930s greatly affected their communities. These events caused changes in how their society was organized.
An anthropologist named Phyllis Kaberry studied the people in the Lyne River area. She noted these changes in the mid-1930s.
