About Wissam Joubran
Early Life and Musical Journey
Wissam was born in Nazareth, a city in Israel. He grew up in a family of musicians. His father, Hatem Joubran, was a famous oud maker. Wissam also has two brothers, Samir and Adnan, who play the oud. Wissam is part of the fourth generation in his family to make string instruments. This means his family has been making instruments for a very long time!
Wissam showed musical talent from a very young age. When he was five, his fingers were already sensitive to the feel of wood. By the age of six, he made his first instrument all by himself. Wissam started learning the violin, but by age seven, he switched to playing the oud.
Becoming a Master Instrument Maker
Wissam's skill with his fingers and his musical sense helped him assist his father in making ouds. This experience helped him understand both the instrument and its music better. He is known for how well he can show the structure of music. He also has a deep understanding of the Arab maqamat scale system.
Wissam wanted to make ouds even better than traditional methods. In 2001, he traveled to Cremona, a city in northern Italy. There, he studied under Maestro Giorgio Cè. Just one year later, in 2002, he won a special award. He received it from the Antonio Stradivarius Institute for being the best violin maker. He improved the design of the oud, making instruments that could produce a stronger sound.
In 2005, Wissam became a Master string instrument maker. He was the first Arab luthier (instrument maker) to graduate from the Antonio Stradivarius Institute. Like his father before him, Wissam continues his family's tradition of making instruments.
Le Trio Joubran and Other Works
In 2002, Wissam started performing concerts in Europe with his brother Samir. Wissam also played music during readings of Mahmoud Darwish's poetry. In 2003, Wissam's international career took off with his album "Tamaas."
In 2005, Wissam, Samir, and Adnan Joubran formed "Le Trio Joubran." This trio has released several albums. Their music combines both traditional and modern Arabic styles. From 2004 to 2008, they performed at least 150 concerts each year. In 2007, Wissam and his brothers released the album "Majâz." This album's name is the Arabic word for "metaphor."
Wissam has also composed the original music for many films. These include "Adieu Gary" directed by Nassim Amaouche, and "The Last Flight (2009 film)" (Le Dernier Vol), directed by Karim Dridi.
