Wittamer & Co is a famous chocolate maker from Brussels, Belgium. They are known for their delicious chocolates and Belgian pralines. This company has a long history of making sweet treats for people to enjoy.

A Sweet History

How Wittamer Began

The story of Wittamer & Co started way back in 1910. A man named Henri Wittamer and his wife, Marie, opened a bakery (which is called a boulangerie in French) in Brussels. Their shop was located on a famous square called the Place du Grand Sablon.

Growing the Family Business

Over the years, the business stayed in the family. Henri and Marie's son, Henri II, and his wife, Yvonne, took over the shop. Later, in the 1960s, their son, Henri III, and his sister, Myriam, became the new owners. Henri III learned how to be a maître chocolatier, which means a master chocolate maker, in Switzerland. He brought new ideas and modern ways of making chocolate to the company.

Expanding and Royal Connections

In the 1980s, Wittamer & Co grew even more. They opened their first shop outside of Belgium, all the way in Kobe, Japan! Today, the Wittamer family is still running the business, with the fourth generation now in charge.

A very special moment for Wittamer happened in December 1999. They were chosen to create the dessert for the wedding of Lady Mathilde d'Udekem d'Acoz and Philippe, Crown Prince of Belgium. The King of Belgium himself picked the type of cake! Because their dessert was so excellent, Wittamer was given a special honor. They received a royal warrant of appointment, which means they are official suppliers to the Belgian royal court.

Where to Find Wittamer Today

The very first Wittamer café is still open at 6 Place du Grand Sablon in Brussels. There is also a bigger shop at number 12 on the same street. This larger shop offers an even wider selection of their famous chocolates and Belgian pralines.
