How Wlpan Started
The very first Wlpan course began in the summer of 1973. It was organized by Aberystwyth University in Wales. A person named Chris Rees helped set up this first course. It lasted for about six weeks.
Where Did the Name "Wlpan" Come From?
The word Wlpan actually comes from a Hebrew word, "Ulpan" (אולפן). In Hebrew, "Ulpan" means "studio." It's also used to describe a very intensive way of learning the Hebrew language. So, the Welsh Wlpan course got its name from this idea of fast, focused language learning.
