Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Wolf is a small, unincorporated community located in Tuscarawas County, in the U.S. state of Ohio. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or a village. Instead, it's usually governed by the larger county it's part of.

A Look Back: The History of Wolf

Wolf has an interesting history, even though it's a small place. It was first known by a slightly different name: Wolfs Station.

How Wolf Got Its Name

The community of Wolfs Station was officially started in 1874. It was named after a person named Enoch G. Wolf, who was involved in laying out the community. So, the name "Wolf" comes from his last name!

Life in Wolf's Past

In 1874, a post office was opened in Wolfs Station, which was very important for people to send and receive mail. Later, in 1882, the name of the post office and the community was officially changed to just "Wolf." The post office served the community for many years before it finally closed in 1940.

Besides the post office, Wolf also had a station for the Cleveland and Marietta Railroad. Railroad stations were like bus stops today, but for trains. They were very important for travel and for moving goods in the past, connecting small communities like Wolf to bigger towns and cities.
