Sir Wolstan Dixie (born 1576, died 25 July 1650) was an important person in English history. He is best known for starting the Dixie Grammar School in Market Bosworth, a town in England.

Early Life and Family

Sir Wolstan Dixie was born in 1576. His father, John Dixie, was a yeoman farmer. This means his family owned and worked their own land. Wolstan went to Gray's Inn starting in 1595, which was a place where people studied law.

In 1594, Wolstan inherited land and property in Market Bosworth. He got this from his great-uncle, who was also named Sir Wolstan Dixie. His great-uncle was a very famous person who had been the Lord Mayor of London. He also helped support learning at Cambridge University.

A Knight and Public Servant

In 1604, King James I of England made Wolstan a knight. This meant he was given the title "Sir." He became known as Sir Wolstan Dixie of Appleby Magna.

In 1608, Sir Wolstan moved to Market Bosworth. He began building a large house for himself and also started work on the grammar school.

Sir Wolstan also served in important public roles. In 1614, he became the High Sheriff of Leicestershire. This was a very important local official who helped keep law and order. In 1625, he was chosen to represent his county in the English Parliament. This meant he helped make laws for the country.

Legacy and Death

Sir Wolstan Dixie died in 1650. He had married Frances Beaumont, and they had four sons and four daughters. His most lasting legacy is the Dixie Grammar School, which continues to educate students today.
