Woman with Bicycle by Knox Martin
Woman with Bicycle

Woman with Bicycle was a huge wall painting, also known as a mural. It was six stories tall! An American artist named Knox Martin created it in 1979. The Public Art Fund helped make this amazing artwork possible.

A Famous New York City Mural

Woman with Bicycle was a well-known piece of art in New York City. You could find it in Manhattan, at the corner of Houston and MacDougal Streets.

What Was the Mural Like?

Vivian Raynor, a writer for The New York Times, wrote about Knox Martin and Woman with Bicycle in 1981. She said that the artist was famous for his special drawings and symbols. These often showed nature or, sometimes, the shape of people. The mural was painted with bright, bold colors, like those used in Pop Art, and it was very large.

What Happened to the Mural?

Sadly, in 2002, the Woman with Bicycle mural was covered up. An advertisement was placed over it, hiding the artwork from view.
