The Woodbury Historic District No. 1 is a special area in Woodbury, Connecticut. It includes the main part of the town center. This district stretches for about two miles along Main Street, which is also United States Route 6. It goes from Flanders Road in the north to Old Sherman Hill Road in the south. This area shows off the town's history through its buildings. You can see styles from the late 1600s all the way to today. This historic district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 11, 1971.

Discovering Woodbury's Historic Center

The town of Woodbury was first settled by colonists in 1673. They bought the land from the Potatuck people. The first homes were built along an old Native American trail. This trail is now mostly followed by Main Street. Woodbury officially became a town in 1674. It was like a "mother town" for many towns around it. By 1807, Woodbury had its current borders.

A Look at Woodbury's Past Buildings

Woodbury was a successful farming town in the 1700s and early 1800s. Many of the buildings you see in the town center today are from that time. The historic town center is about two miles long on Main Street. Some parts also go down side streets. This area covers more than 200 acres (about 81 hectares). It has 161 buildings that are important to history.

About half of these buildings were built before 1830. Thirteen of them are even older, built before 1740. The very oldest buildings, which are houses and barns, date back to the 1680s.

Important Historic Sites and Churches

One very important building is the Glebe House. It was built in 1740. This house is famous because it was where an important early meeting of the Episcopal Church took place.

The district also has nine churches. Three of these churches were built before 1820 in a style called Federal style. The church that stands out the most visually is the Roman Catholic church. It was built later, in 1902.
