Woodfest Wales (which in Welsh is Gŵyl Coed Cymru) is a super fun annual event all about wood! Imagine seeing amazing artists carve wood with chainsaws, or watching skilled people climb tall poles. It's a festival that celebrates everything to do with trees and timber.
The first Woodfest Wales happened on June 8-9, 2002, in a place called St Asaph. It quickly became very popular. By 2004, more than 18,000 people came to visit!
What is Woodfest Wales?
Woodfest Wales is a special festival where you can see incredible things made from wood. It's not just about wood, though! It's a big outdoor event with lots of different activities for everyone to enjoy.
Main Attractions at the Festival
One of the most exciting parts of Woodfest Wales is the chainsaw carving competition. Artists use powerful chainsaws to turn big logs into detailed sculptures. It's amazing to watch them work!
Besides carving, you can also see:
- Logging competitions: Watch strong people show off their skills with axes and saws.
- Pole climbing: See how fast and high climbers can go up tall wooden poles.
- Birds of prey displays: Get up close to magnificent eagles, hawks, and owls.
- Mountain biking: Sometimes there are exciting bike displays or trails.
- Cookery demonstrations: Learn new recipes and watch chefs in action.
- Arts and crafts: Discover unique handmade items and maybe even try making something yourself.
- Fairground rides: Have fun on classic fairground attractions.
Where and When Does it Happen?
Because Woodfest Wales became so popular, a second event was added in 2005. Now, the festival happens in two different locations:
- The original event is held in St Asaph, usually in June.
- A second event takes place in May at Margam Country Park, which is near Port Talbot in South Wales.
Both events offer a fantastic day out, celebrating the beauty and uses of wood, along with many other exciting activities. It's a great way to learn about nature and see incredible skills in action!
