Entrance to Woodhouse Copse

Woodhouse Copse is a special woodland area on the Isle of Wight in England. It covers about 18 hectares, which is like 18 large football fields! This beautiful wood is located on the northeast side of the island. It sits between the villages of Whippingham and Wootton.

What is Woodhouse Copse?

This amazing woodland is owned and looked after by Graeme Kirk. It's a place where nature thrives. The wood is bordered by open fields to its west and north. To the east, you'll find Palmer's Brook. This brook slowly winds its way towards King's Quay and then out to the sea. As the brook gets closer to the sea, the land around it becomes more marshy.

Protecting the Woodland

Around 2007, Graeme Kirk took over the care of Woodhouse Copse. Since then, efforts have been made to manage and improve the woodland. There are only a few paths for people to walk through the woods. This means public access is quite limited.

Woodhouse Copse was once an ancient woodland. However, it was later planted with non-native conifer trees. Graeme Kirk, along with friends and helpers, is slowly removing these non-native trees. This helps the original, native plants and trees grow back. Everyone who wants to help with this important work is welcome!

Home to Red Squirrels

Woodhouse Copse is a very important home for wildlife. It is especially known as a place where red squirrels live. These charming creatures are native to the UK. They need safe woodlands like Woodhouse Copse to survive and thrive. Protecting this wood helps protect these special animals.
