The Woodruff House is a special old house located at 377 Berlin Street in Southington, Connecticut. It was built around 1780. This house is a great example of an 18th-century "Cape" style home. Later, it got some cool updates with "Greek Revival" designs. Because it's so well-preserved, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. This list helps protect important historical places.
What Does the Woodruff House Look Like?
The Woodruff House is found east of downtown Southington. It sits on the south side of Berlin Street, which is also known as Connecticut Route 364. The house is 1-1/2 stories tall and made of wood. It has a roof that slopes down on two sides, called a gable roof. There's a brick chimney right in the middle. The outside walls are covered with clapboards, which are long, thin boards.
The front of the house has five sections, called bays. There are tall, flat columns, called pilasters, at the corners. These pilasters go up to a decorative band, called an entablature, just under the roof's edge. The main door is in the center. It has narrow windows on each side, called sidelight windows. The door is also framed by pilasters and topped with a fancy, decorated band.
Inside, you can find wide pine floors from the 1700s. Some of the original wood panels are still there too. The house also has three fireplaces, which were important for heating back then. In many old houses, the entrance area has a small, winding staircase. But the Woodruff House was built without one.
A Look Back in Time
Experts believe the Woodruff House was built around 1780. This idea comes from looking at old property records. It was probably built by someone from the Woodruff family. The Woodruffs were some of the first people to settle in the Southington area.
The "Greek Revival" style parts of the house were added later, in the 1800s. This style was very popular back then. Things like the inside frames around the windows were also added during this time. These changes helped update the house while keeping its original charm.
