The Woolworth Estate is a huge, historic property located in Glen Cove, New York. It was built in 1916 for a very famous businessman named Frank Winfield Woolworth. He was the founder of the Woolworth's stores, which were popular "five-and-dime" shops.

A talented architect named C. P. H. Gilbert designed this amazing estate. It includes a giant main house called Winfield Hall, a big garage, an impressive entrance arch, two greenhouses, and even a small building called a tea house.

Winfield Hall: A Grand Mansion

Winfield Hall is the main house on the Woolworth Estate. It was built after Frank Woolworth's previous home was damaged by a fire. Luckily, the plans for this new, grand house were already ready!

This mansion is built in the Italian Renaissance style. It has beautiful marble walls and tall pillars. Building this house was incredibly expensive, costing around nine million dollars at the time. Just the main staircase inside cost two million dollars!

Life After the Woolworths

After the Woolworth family moved out, Winfield Hall was empty for several years. In 1929, the wife of Richard S. Reynolds bought the house. He was famous for his company, the R.S. Reynolds Metal Company.

Later, the house became a special school for young women called the Grace Downs Academy. In 1978, Martin T. Carey purchased it. He is the brother of Hugh Carey, who was the Governor of New York.

Sadly, a part of Winfield Hall was badly damaged by a fire on January 28, 2015.

A National Treasure: Historic Recognition

The Woolworth Estate is considered a very important historical place. Because of its unique history and architecture, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. This list helps protect special buildings and places across the United States.
