A Look Back: The Museum's History
How It Started
The museum first opened its doors in 1833. It was created by a group of people called the Worcestershire Natural History Society. They were interested in nature and history.
At first, the museum was on Angel Street. But it quickly needed more space! So, in 1836, it moved to a bigger building on Foregate Street.
The Victoria Institute
Since 1896, the museum has been in a special building called the Victoria Institute. This building was made to be many things at once: a public library, a museum, and a school for art and science. It's a place where people could learn and explore.
Joining Forces with Soldiers' Stories
In 1970, something new happened. The collection from the Worcestershire Regiment Museum moved to the Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum. This means you can now learn about the history of soldiers from the area right here!
A Generous Gift
In 2021, the Art Gallery & Museum received a very kind gift. Someone donated £300,000 to help the museum continue its work. This money helps them keep showing cool exhibits and taking care of their collections.
What You Can See: The Collections
The gallery always has new and exciting things to see. They often show contemporary art, which is art made recently, and craft exhibitions. Crafts are things made by hand, like pottery or textiles.
Exploring Worcester's Past
When you visit, you can learn about Worcester's industrial history. This means how factories and businesses grew in the area. You can also discover local geology, which is about the rocks and land around Worcester. And there's natural history, showing animals and plants from the region.
Art Through the Years
The museum also has many paintings, prints, and photographs from the 1800s and 1900s. It's like a time machine for art!
The Soldier Galleries
One special part of the museum is the Worcester Soldier galleries. Here, you can see items from the Worcestershire Regiment and the Queen's Own Worcestershire Hussars. These collections tell the stories of brave soldiers and their history.
