The World's Largest Office Chair is a giant chair you can see next to the road in Anniston, Alabama. It's a fun roadside attraction that gets people's attention!

About the Giant Chair

This huge office chair stands very tall. It is 33 feet 1 inch (about 10 meters) high. The chair is also 19 feet 7 inches (about 6 meters) wide. It weighs around 2,000 pounds (about 907 kilograms). That's like the weight of a small car!

How the Chair Was Built

Why Build a Giant Chair?

A man named Leonard "Sonny" Miller owned a store called Miller's Office Supply. He wanted to make his furniture business famous. So, he decided to build a super-sized office chair! He hoped it would make people stop and notice his store.

Chair Design and Materials

The giant chair was built in 1981. It looked just like a regular office chair from The HON Company. But all its measurements were changed from inches to feet. This made it huge!

Workers used a lot of strong materials to build it. They used 10 tons of steel and 15 tons of cement. This made the chair very strong. It can even stand firm in winds up to 85 miles per hour.

Visiting the Chair

When it was first built, there was a spiral staircase. This staircase let people climb up to the chair's seat. The seat itself was 15 feet wide and 15 feet long. The whole chair was finished in May 1981.

Guinness World Records and Other Chairs

The First Record

In 1982, the Anniston chair got a special award. Guinness World Records said it was the "world's largest chair." This made it very famous!

Other Giant Chairs

Later, another company, Bassett Furniture, built a large chair. They said it was the world's largest. But the city of Anniston proved their chair was bigger. So, Bassett Furniture changed their claim. They then called their chair the "world's largest chair on tour."

In 1995, a new chair in Manzano, Italy, became the official "world's largest chair." This chair was seven stories tall! But the Anniston chair still held a special title. People unofficially called it the "world's largest office chair."

Today, the official "world's largest chair" is in Austria. It was made by a furniture store called XXXLutz. This chair is often seen in their TV commercials.

The Chair's Journey

A Local Landmark

After it was built, the giant chair became a big landmark. It helped people find their way around Anniston. The local business group even flew visitors over the chair to show it off!

Moving and Repairing

In the 1990s, Miller's Office Supply moved to a new spot. The land where the chair stood was put up for sale. The spiral staircase was also taken away. For many years, the chair didn't get much care. It started to look old and rusty.

But then, Miller's Office Supply moved back to its first location. The giant chair was cleaned up and repainted. Now it looks much better!
