What Makes the Building Special?
The Wright and Taylor Building uses parts of two cool building styles:
- Late Gothic Revival
- Tudor Revival
It was built by a company called Wright and Taylor, Inc. This company created the two-story space for businesses. You can find it at 611-17 S. 4th Street. What really makes the building stand out is its use of shiny, glazed terra cotta. Terra cotta is a type of baked clay used for decoration.
History of the Wright and Taylor Building
Wright and Taylor, Inc., was famous for selling a type of bourbon whiskey called Old Charter. The Old Charter Distillery, where the whiskey was made, was right across the street from the building.
What Was Inside?
During a time called the Prohibition era, it was illegal to make or sell alcohol. So, the building housed many small businesses instead. It continued to have different shops and offices until the late 1960s.
A New Life for the Building
After the 1960s, the building was empty for almost 30 years. But then, it got a big makeover! In 2014, the renovated building opened its doors again. It became a live music place called the Mercury Ballroom. Now, people go there to enjoy concerts and shows.
