Writ of election facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A writ of election is a special official order. It tells people that an election needs to happen. Think of it like a formal announcement or a "go ahead" signal for voting.

In Canada, this writ is the only way to start an election for the House of Commons. The House of Commons is where elected representatives make laws for the country.

How Elections Start in Canada

When the Government decides it's time for a general election, or if it's required to hold one, a writ of election is prepared. This happens for every voting area, called a "riding," across Canada. The Chief Electoral Officer creates these writs. Then, the Governor General formally issues them. The Governor General is the King's representative in Canada. Once the writs are issued, the election process officially begins!

What Happens When a Seat is Empty?

Sometimes, a single seat in the House of Commons becomes empty. This can happen if a representative resigns or for other reasons. When this occurs, a special election is held just for that one seat. This is called a by-election. To start a by-election, a writ of election is issued specifically for that empty seat. It's the same official order, but for a smaller election.
