Wulfstan (who died in December 956) was an important church leader. He served as the Archbishop of York from 931 to 952. To tell him apart from another leader with the same name, he is often called Wulfstan I.

Becoming Archbishop

Wulfstan became an archbishop in 931. This means he was officially made a high-ranking church leader. It is thought that King Æthelstan agreed to his appointment. Wulfstan was present for many of the king's official documents, called charters, between 931 and 935. However, for a few years after that, from 936 to 941, he was not seen at the king's court. No one knows why he was away during this time.

Later Years and Challenges

Later, a king named Eadred took Wulfstan prisoner. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, an old record of English history, says that King Eadred arrested Wulfstan. This happened because people had often complained about Wulfstan to the king. Wulfstan was taken to a place called Iudanbyrig, but we don't know exactly where that was.

Even though he was arrested, Wulfstan was later allowed to return to his church duties. However, he had to work from Dorchester, which was about 230 miles (370 km) away from York. This made it hard for him to lead the church in York. He did sign some official papers in 953, so he was not in prison then.

Wulfstan did not attend the king's court much in 956. He might have been ill around that time. After Wulfstan I faced these difficulties, Oscytel became the new Archbishop of York in 956. Wulfstan died in December 956 in a town called Oundle, in Northamptonshire. He was buried there.
