Early Life and Education
Wylie Dufresne was born in 1970 in Providence, Rhode Island. He grew up and went to school in New York. He studied philosophy at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, and earned his degree in 1992. After that, he went to The French Culinary Institute in New York, which is now known as The International Culinary Center. This is where he learned how to become a chef.
Chef Career and Restaurants
After culinary school, Wylie Dufresne worked for a famous chef named Jean-Georges Vongerichten. He learned a lot and eventually became a sous chef, which is like a head assistant chef. In 1999, he became the first chef at a restaurant called 71 Clinton Fresh Food.
Opening WD-50 and Alder
In April 2003, Chef Dufresne opened his own restaurant in Manhattan called wd~50. The name came from his initials and the street address. This restaurant became very famous for its unique and experimental dishes. Later, in March 2013, he opened a second restaurant called Alder. Both WD-50 and Alder were known for their creative food, but they eventually closed in 2014 and 2015.
Du's Donuts and Stretch Pizza
In April 2017, Chef Dufresne started a new project called Du's Donuts & Coffee. It began as a small pop-up shop and grew into a chain with locations in New York. He also wrote a cookbook about his WD-50 restaurant, which was published in October 2017. Today, Chef Dufresne owns and runs Stretch Pizza, a restaurant that continues his innovative approach to food.
Awards and Television Appearances
Wylie Dufresne has received many awards for his cooking. He was nominated several times by the James Beard Foundation, which gives out very important awards in the food world. In 2013, he won the award for Best Chef in New York City.
He has also appeared on many television shows. He was a judge on Bravo's Top Chef for several seasons. He also competed on Top Chef Masters. In 2006, he cooked against Chef Mario Batali on Iron Chef America. Chef Dufresne also appeared on the UK version of Masterchef and the HBO show Treme.
