Where Does Wysox Creek Flow?
Wysox Creek starts on a hill in Windham Township. It flows east for a little while, then turns south. The creek then travels through a valley for many miles. It flows right next to Pennsylvania Route 187 for a long time.
Journey Through Towns
The creek soon enters Orwell Township. Here, another small stream called Trout Brook joins it. Wysox Creek then passes through the areas of North Orwell and Russelville. A few miles later, it picks up another stream called Trout Stream. The creek then turns southwest, still following Pennsylvania Route 187.
Next, Wysox Creek flows into Rome Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. Here, Parks Creek adds its water to Wysox Creek. The creek then goes through the community of Rome. After Rome, it turns south-southwest and another stream, Ballard Creek, joins in.
Reaching the Susquehanna River
Finally, Wysox Creek enters Wysox Township. It keeps flowing southwest and south-southwest. Several more small streams join it along the way. The creek then crosses under U.S. Route 6. Soon after, it meets the Susquehanna River. Wysox Creek joins the Susquehanna River about 268.56 miles (432.20 kilometers) upstream from where the Susquehanna River flows into the ocean.
What is the Area Around the Creek Like?
The land that drains into Wysox Creek is called its watershed. This area covers about 101 square miles (262 square kilometers).
Creek Features
You might see some "strainers" in Wysox Creek. These are things like fallen trees or branches that stick out into the water. They can be tricky for boats. The creek also has gravel bar "riffles." These are bumpy, shallow parts where the water flows quickly over small stones.
Wysox Creek flows through a flat, narrow valley. For most of its length, it is surrounded by forests. These forests are part of the "floodplain," which is the flat land next to the creek that can get covered with water when the creek overflows.
Fun Things to Do: Canoeing!
You can go canoeing on about 6.3 miles (10.1 kilometers) of Wysox Creek. The best time to go is when snow is melting or a few days after a lot of rain. This makes sure there's enough water.
Canoeing Difficulty
The creek has a difficulty rating of 1+. This means it's pretty easy for canoeing, with mostly calm water and only small, easy-to-handle rapids. Edward Gertler, in his book Keystone Canoeing, says the scenery along the creek is "good."
