XLNT Foods (pronounced "excellent") is a very old company from Southern California. It is the longest-running brand of Mexican foods in the United States. The company is famous for its frozen tamales and chili con carne. When XLNT first started, tamaleros (tamale sellers) sold their tamales from horse-drawn wagons in Los Angeles.
The Story of XLNT Foods
How It All Began
XLNT Foods started in 1894. It was founded by Alejandro Morales and was first called the XLNT Tamale Company. Their delicious tamales quickly became a popular food in Los Angeles.
Growing the Business
The company had a factory in a place called Boyle Heights. They sold tamales from horse-drawn carts and in grocery stores. In 1908, Charles Crawford took over the company. He helped it grow even more. At its busiest time, XLNT Foods made 60 different food products!
New Owners and Modern Times
In the 1960s, another company called Alex Foods bought XLNT. Alex Foods also made tamales and flavored corn chips. In the middle of the 20th century, XLNT products were popular as quick and easy meals, much like TV dinners.
In 2010, Santa Fe Importers bought the company. XLNT Foods used to sell its products only in Southern California. Now, you can find their foods shipped all across the United States. The company's main office is now in Long Beach, California.
