What is a Grasstree?
Grasstrees are amazing plants that are only found in Australia. They get their name because they often look like a big clump of grass growing on top of a dark, rough trunk. Many grasstrees can live for hundreds of years. They are a very important part of the Australian bush.
Meet the Xanthorrhoea fulva
This particular grasstree, Xanthorrhoea fulva, has some cool features that make it stand out.
What Does It Look Like?
Unlike many other grasstrees, Xanthorrhoea fulva does not grow a tall trunk above the ground. Instead, its main stem stays hidden underground. It can even have more than one stem underground! Its leaves are a pretty blue-green or blue-grey color. If you were to cut a leaf in half, it would look a bit flat or sunken in the middle.
Where Does It Grow?
Xanthorrhoea fulva loves to grow in places where the ground is wet and sandy. You can find it along the Central Coast of New South Wales, starting from a town called Wyong. From there, it spreads north all the way up to an area near Rockhampton in Queensland.
When Does It Flower?
This grasstree puts on a show of flowers during the late winter and spring months. You can usually see its flowers from August to October.
