What's in a Name?

The exact origin of the words "xerém" and "xarém" isn't fully known, but there are a couple of interesting ideas!

  • Some people think the words come from an Arabic word, "zerem," which means "grain potatoes."
  • Another idea is that "xerém" might come from a Yoruba word, xe'ree. This word means "rattle," like the musical instrument used in some traditions.

Xerém Around the World

Xerém is enjoyed in different ways across various countries. Each place adds its own special touch!

In Brazil

In Brazil, xerém is a traditional food, especially in the Northeast. It's very popular in the state of Pernambuco. Here, the dish is usually made with dried corn kernels.

You can also find a similar dish in Minas Gerais, but it's called "hominy" there. This "hominy" is made from broken corn, which is the main ingredient. Traditionally, hominy in Minas Gerais is cooked with pork ribs. Sometimes, people also make it with chicken, beef, or sausage.

In Cape Verde

Xerém is a very important traditional dish in Cape Verde. It's made with corn mixed with water, bay leaf, butter, and salt. Sometimes, people add fresh tuna, coconut milk, onions, and a spicy pepper called gindungo.

There are different kinds of xerém for different occasions:

  • Xerém de festa is a special version made for parties. It often includes fat, pork meat, and onions. Other times, it might have beans, bay leaf, peppers, and tomatoes.
  • This dish is also a favorite for wedding parties!

On the island of Brava, in June, there's a drum festival where people eat xerém. It's a fun celebration where the dish is prepared, and people play music on drums and dance to traditional coladeira songs.

In Portugal, xarém (or xerém) is a traditional dish from the Algarve region in the south. It's especially common in the city of Olhão. In Olhão, the dish often includes clams, bacon, and ham.
