Xerochrysum (say "zer-oh-KRY-sum") is a group of beautiful flowering plants. They are also known as "everlasting daisies" because their flowers keep their shape and color even after they dry. These plants are native to Australia, meaning they naturally grow there.
The name Xerochrysum was first used by a Russian scientist named Nikolai Tzvelev in 1990. Another name, Bracteantha, was suggested a year later. However, Xerochrysum was named first, so it is the official name for this group of plants.

What are Xerochrysum Plants?
Xerochrysum plants belong to the Asteraceae family. This family is also known as the daisy or sunflower family. Many plants in this family have flowers that look like a central disk surrounded by petals.
These plants are known for their bright, papery flowers. The flowers feel dry to the touch, which helps them last a long time. This is why they are often used in dried flower arrangements.
Different Types of Xerochrysum
There are currently 7 types, or species, of Xerochrysum plants that scientists officially recognize. Each one has its own special features.
- Xerochrysum bicolor
- Xerochrysum bracteatum (This one is often called the Strawflower or Golden Everlasting)
- Xerochrysum collierianum A.M.Buchanan & Schah.
- Xerochrysum palustre (Also known as Swamp Everlasting)
- Xerochrysum papillosum (Labill.) R.J.Bayer
- Xerochrysum subundulatum (You might hear this called Alpine Everlasting or Orange Everlasting)
- Xerochrysum viscosum (This one is known as Sticky Everlasting)
In the past, these plants were sometimes grouped with another genus called Helichrysum. But now, scientists have decided they are different enough to have their own group, Xerochrysum.
