Xosefa Xovellanos facts for kids
Xosefa de Xovellanos y Xove Ramírez (1745–1807) was an important writer from Asturias, a region in Spain. She was the younger sister of a famous Asturian politician named Gaspar Melchor de Xovellanos. Xosefa was born in Gijón, Spain, on June 4, 1745.
She married Domingo Gonzalez de Argandona, who was a top lawyer for the government of the Principality of Asturias. Later in her life, Xosefa became a nun. She joined the Recoletes Convent of San Agustin, which was very close to her childhood home. She passed away on June 2, 1807, after an illness.
Her Writings
Xosefa de Xovellanos wrote many poems and other works in the Asturian language. For a long time, her writings were not widely known. However, in 1839, a person named Xosé Caveda y Nava collected her poems into a book. This book was called Colección de poesías en dialecto asturiano. Thanks to this collection, people today can still read and enjoy Xosefa's important contributions to Asturian literature.
