The Yí River, known as Río Yí in Spanish, is an important river in Uruguay. It is one of the main rivers that flows into the Río Negro. The Tacuarembó River is another big river that also joins the Río Negro.
Where the Yí River Flows
The Yí River begins its journey in the Cuchilla Grande highlands. These are high areas located in Uruguay. From there, the river flows mostly towards the west. It travels through the central part of Uruguay. Finally, it reaches and joins the Río Negro.
Along its way, the Yí River gets water from smaller rivers. These smaller rivers are called tributaries. Some of the rivers that flow into the Yí River include the Porongos River and the Chamangá River.
River Boundaries
The Yí River also helps to mark the borders between different parts of Uruguay. For a long stretch, it forms the boundary between the Durazno Department and the Florida Department.
Later on, the river continues to form part of the border. This time, it separates the Durazno Department from the Flores Department. The Chamangá River, which is a tributary, joins the Yí River in this area.
