YM (which stood for Your Magazine) was a popular magazine in the United States. It was made especially for teenaged girls. This magazine was published for a very long time, 72 years in total!

It started way back in the 1930s. YM was the second-oldest magazine for girls in the United States. The oldest one is called Seventeen.

How YM Magazine Started

YM actually began as two different magazines. These were called Compact and Calling All Girls.

Compact Magazine

Compact magazine was first published in 1932. It was made for older teenagers.

Calling All Girls Magazine

Calling All Girls was for younger girls. It started in July 1941. People really liked a teen advice column in Parents' Magazine. This interest led to the creation of Calling All Girls.

It was the first magazine made just for girls. It had fun things like comics, fashion tips, and short stories. At first, it came out four times a year. But it became so popular that it soon came out every month. By 1945, it was selling 500,000 copies of each issue! The average reader was about 13 years old. This magazine focused a lot on comics. Because of this, it did not attract older teens or fashion advertisers as much.

Changing Names Over Time

In the 1960s, the two magazines, Compact and Calling All Girls, joined together. They became one magazine called Young Miss.

The name changed again in the 1980s to Young & Modern. Then, in the year 2000, it changed one last time to YM. People said YM stood for Your Magazine.

The End of YM

YM magazine stopped being published in 2004. If you had a subscription to YM, it was replaced with a subscription to Teen Vogue magazine instead.
