Ya'akov Cahan (born June 26, 1881; died November 20, 1960) was a very important Israeli writer. He was a talented poet, a writer of plays, and a translator. He also studied the Hebrew language deeply.

Life Story of Ya'akov Cahan

Ya'akov Cahan was born in a town called Slutsk. This town was part of the Russian Empire back then. Today, Slutsk is in a country called Belarus.

In 1934, Ya'akov Cahan moved to the land that would later become Israel. At that time, it was known as the British Mandate of Palestine. Moving to Israel is called "aliyah" in Hebrew.

Awards and Achievements

Ya'akov Cahan received several major awards for his writing and translations. These awards show how much his work was valued.

Bialik Prize

  • In 1938, Cahan won the Bialik Prize for Literature. This is one of Israel's most respected literary awards. It is given to writers for their excellent work in Hebrew literature.

Israel Prize

  • He was honored with the Israel Prize for literature twice. He received this award in 1953 and again in 1958. The Israel Prize is the highest cultural honor given by the State of Israel.

Tchernichovsky Prize

  • In 1956, Cahan received the Tchernichovsky Prize. This award is given for outstanding translations. He earned it for translating important works from German into Hebrew.
  • He translated the first part of Goethe's Faust by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. He also translated other plays by Goethe, like Torquato Tasso and Iphigenia in Tauris.
  • Cahan also translated a collection of poems by the famous German poet Heinrich Heine.
