Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Yadaneru, also known as Jeteneru, were a group of Indigenous people. They were once thought to live in the Cape York Peninsula in northern Queensland, Australia.

Where They Lived

The Yadaneru people had their traditional lands in a specific area. According to researcher Norman Tindale, their country covered about 900 square miles (2,330 square kilometers). This area was centered around Saltwater Creek. It was located in the southwest part of Princess Charlotte Bay. Their land stretched inland towards a place called Musgrave.

About the Yadaneru People

Researchers Norman Tindale and H.M. Hale studied Indigenous groups. They heard reports about the Yadaneru people. Their lands were said to be along Saltwater Creek and Annie River. This area was west of the Kokolamalama people, inland from Princess Charlotte Bay.

By 1927, if the Yadaneru were a separate group, they were very few in number. The researchers noted that local people called them the "salt pan people." They spoke a dialect similar to the Kokolamalama language. In 1927, only one older man and five women were still alive. There were two main groups, or clans, within the Yadaneru. One lived near the coast, and the other lived further inland.
