Yael Bar Zohar was born in Tel Aviv, Israel. Her family is Jewish. Her father, Menachem Bar Zohar, was born in Poland and moved to Israel. Her mother, Ella Fogel-Bar Zohar, was born in Israel. Yael also has an older sister named Michal.

In 1999, Yael joined the Israel Defense Forces. She was considered an 'excellent artist' because of her talents. She worked as a producer in the filming unit for the Israeli Air Force. Yael served for one year, even though girls usually serve for two years.
