Sannikov's Amazing Discoveries

Sannikov made several important discoveries. In 1800, he found and mapped Stolbovoy Island. This means he drew a map of it. Five years later, in 1805, he discovered Faddeyevsky Island.

He also joined a big trip led by Matvei Gedenschtrom. This was between 1809 and 1810. During this time, Sannikov crossed the large island of New Siberia. A year later, he explored Faddeyevsky Island again. He also found a new area of land called Bunge Land.

The Mystery of Sannikov Land

Yakov Sannikov believed there was a huge piece of land north of Kotelny Island. This was an island that no one had ever seen. People called this idea the "hypothetical island." It became known as Sannikov Land. Many explorers searched for it, but it was never found. It remains a mystery.

Places Named After Sannikov

A narrow body of water between two islands is called a strait. There is a strait between Maly Lyakhovsky and Kotelny islands. This strait is named the Sannikov Strait in honor of Yakov Sannikov. It remembers his important work as an explorer.
