Where is Yalí Located?
Yalí is found in the northeastern part of the Antioquia Department. This area is in the northwest of Colombia. Being 1,250 meters high means it has a cooler climate than places closer to sea level. Imagine living in a town surrounded by green hills!
A Look at Yalí's History
Yalí became an official municipality in 1956. This means it became its own local government area. The town was named after one of its founders, a person named Lorenzo Yalí. In the very beginning, the town's main way of making money was through mining. People would dig for valuable minerals in the ground.
What Yalí Produces Today
Today, Yalí's economy has changed. It no longer relies on mining. Now, the main activity is "cañicultura", which means growing sugarcane. The sugarcane is used to make a product called panela. Panela is a type of unrefined whole cane sugar, very popular in Colombia and other parts of Latin America. It's used in many traditional foods and drinks.
