Yandeyarra (also called Mugarinya) is a large Aboriginal community. It is found in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, within the area of the Town of Port Hedland.
History of Yandeyarra
Yandeyarra was started in 1964. About 400 people live there. The community is part of the Yandeyarra pastoral station. A pastoral station is a very large farm where animals like cattle are raised. The first buildings here were an outstation of the main farm.
Who Owns the Land?
The Yandeyarra community is on land that belongs to the Kariyarra people. This is recognized under native title laws. Native title means that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have rights to their traditional lands and waters.
Learning at Yandeyarra
Children in Yandeyarra go to the Yandeyarra Remote Community School. This school teaches students from kindergarten all the way to Year 12. Around 40 students are enrolled at the school.
Planning for the Future
Yandeyarra has a special plan called "Layout Plan No.1". This plan helps guide how the community will grow and develop. It was approved by the community and the Western Australian Planning Commission in 2001. This helps make sure the community grows in a good way for everyone.
