Yantis is a small town in Wood County, Texas, United States. In 2020, about 405 people lived there. The town is special because it's almost completely surrounded by the Lake Fork Reservoir. You can find Yantis where State Highway 154 and Farm to Market Road 17 meet. It's about 12 miles north of Quitman, which is the county seat of Wood County.

History of Yantis
Early Settlement
The area where Yantis is now was first settled around 1860 by Harry M. Matthews. By 1870, a person named J. Singleton was running a gristmill and a cotton gin there. These were important for grinding grain and processing cotton.
How Yantis Got Its Name
For a while, the community used the post office in Quitman. But in 1885, Yantis got its very own post office. The town was named after its first postmaster, George R. Yantis. George Yantis also had his own gristmill and gin in the area around 1890.
Growth and Development
By 1896, Yantis was growing. It had its own local officials, two churches, and five schools. This shows how important education was to the community. By 1914, the town had phone service and 21 businesses, including the Yantis State Bank. The number of people living in Yantis reached its highest point in the 1930s, with about 500 residents. An oilfield was found near Yantis in 1947, but it didn't change the town much in the long run. Yantis officially became a town in the late 1960s.
