Yantley has experienced powerful tornadoes in its history. These storms are measured using scales that describe how strong they are.
1953 Tornado Event
On May 1, 1953, a very strong tornado hit Yantley. This tornado was rated an F4 on the Fujita scale. An F4 tornado causes devastating damage, like leveling well-built houses. Sadly, this storm killed two people and injured three others in the community.
2011 Tornado Event
Almost 60 years later, on April 27, 2011, another powerful tornado struck Yantley. This one was part of the huge 2011 Super Outbreak, which saw many tornadoes across the southeastern United States. The tornado that hit Yantley was rated an EF4 on the Enhanced Fujita scale. An EF4 tornado can completely destroy well-built homes and throw cars. In Yantley, it knocked down many trees and power lines. It also caused a lot of damage to buildings.
