The yarey palm (scientific name: Copernicia baileyana) is a special type of palm tree. It grows naturally only in eastern and central Cuba. This means it is endemic to Cuba, which means it is found nowhere else in the world.
Like other palms in its group, the yarey palm is a fan palm. This means its leaves spread out like a fan, not like feathers.
What is the Yarey Palm?
The yarey palm is a tall tree. It can grow to be about 10 to 20 meters (33 to 66 feet) high. Its trunk, or stem, is usually 40 centimeters (16 inches) wide. Sometimes, the trunk can be even wider, up to 60 centimeters (24 inches). The trunk can also look a bit swollen in places.
Its Fruit
The yarey palm produces small, black fruits. Each fruit is about 1.8 to 2.3 centimeters (0.7 to 0.9 inches) long. It is also about 1.8 to 2 centimeters (0.7 to 0.8 inches) wide.
How People Use the Yarey Palm
The leaves of the yarey palm are very useful. People in Cuba use them to make many different things.
- They weave the leaves into hats.
- They also make baskets.
- The leaves are used for other woven items too.
- Another important use is for thatch. Thatch is a material used to cover roofs, especially on traditional houses.
