Early Life and Family
Yaroslav was born in 1230. His father was Yaroslav II of Vladimir, who was also a Grand Prince. Yaroslav was the younger brother of the famous Alexander Nevsky.
In 1247, Yaroslav received the town of Tver from his uncle. This was the start of his rule as the Prince of Tver.
Becoming a Prince
Conflict with Alexander Nevsky
In 1252, Yaroslav and his brother Andrey tried to take over Pereslavl-Zalessky. This city was Alexander Nevsky's main base. Alexander fought back with help from Tatar soldiers.
During this fight, Alexander captured Yaroslav's children. Sadly, Yaroslav's wife was also killed in the battle.
Prince of Novgorod
After this conflict, Yaroslav went to Ladoga. In 1255, he became the prince of Novgorod. This happened after Alexander's son Vasily was removed from power.
However, Alexander soon returned to Novgorod. He removed the city's leader, called a posadnik. By the next year, Vasily was sent back to rule Novgorod.
In 1258, Yaroslav visited Sarai. This was the capital city of the Golden Horde. Two years later, he led the Novgorod army. They fought against the Teutonic Knights, who were a group of warrior monks.

A New Grand Prince
When Alexander Nevsky died in 1263, Yaroslav and his brother Andrey argued. Both wanted to become the next Grand Prince. They traveled to the Golden Horde to let the Khan decide.
The Khan chose Yaroslav to be the Grand Prince. However, Yaroslav decided to live in Novgorod. He married the daughter of a local noble, called a boyar.
Challenges in Novgorod
Even though he was Grand Prince, some groups in Novgorod still plotted against him. They wanted his brother Vasily of Kostroma or Alexander's son Dmitri of Pereslavl to rule instead.
In 1270, the armies of three princes gathered near Staraya Russa. They were ready for a big battle. But the head of the church, the metropolitan, managed to make peace between them.
Yaroslav gave up his claim to Novgorod to his nephew. He then went with his nephew to Sarai.
Death and Legacy
Yaroslav died on his way back to Tver. He passed away on September 9, 1271. He was around 40 or 41 years old.
After his death, his eldest son Svyatoslav became the Prince of Tver. Later, his son Mikhail took over. Yaroslav's family continued to rule Tver for many years.
