Yasutaro Matsuki (松木 安太郎, Matsuki Yasutarō, born November 28, 1957) is a famous Japanese football player and manager. He was born in Chuo, Tokyo, Japan. Matsuki played as a defender for the Japan national team. After his playing career, he became a football commentator.

Playing for Clubs: Yasutaro Matsuki's Career

Yasutaro Matsuki started his football journey in 1973. He joined the Yomiuri club, which was then in Division 2 of the Japan Soccer League. In 1978, his team moved up to Division 1.

Matsuki's time at Yomiuri was very successful. The club won the Japan Soccer League championship three times. They also won the JSL Cup twice and the Emperor's Cup three times. From 1983, Matsuki became the team's captain. This period is known as a "golden era" for the club. He retired from playing in 1990. During his career, he played 269 games and scored 9 goals in the league. He was chosen as one of the "Best Eleven" players three times.

Playing for Japan: National Team Career

In April 1984, Yasutaro Matsuki was chosen to play for the Japan national football team. His first game was on April 15, 1984, against Thailand. This was part of the qualification games for the 1984 Summer Olympics.

He also played for Japan in the qualification matches for the 1986 FIFA World Cup. Matsuki represented Japan at the 1986 Asian Games too. He played a total of 11 games for the national team until 1986.

Coaching Career: Leading Teams to Victory

After he stopped playing, Matsuki began a new career as a coach. He started coaching at his former club, Yomiuri, in 1990. The club later changed its name to Verdy Kawasaki and then Tokyo Verdy.

In 1993, Matsuki became the manager of Verdy Kawasaki. Under his leadership, the club won the J1 League championship and the J.League Cup. He was recognized as the "Best Manager" for two years in a row (1993 and 1994). He left the club at the end of the 1994 season.

In 1998, Matsuki managed another team, Cerezo Osaka, for one season. In 2001, he returned to Tokyo Verdy. However, he left the team in July of that year.

  • He appeared on the cover of the Japanese version of World Cup Striker. This was a soccer game released in 1994 for the Super NES.
  • In the PlayStation game J-League Jikkyō Winning Eleven 97, Matsuki was one of the commentators for the matches.
