Yekaterina Mikhailovna Bakunina (born September 1, 1810, died May 6, 1894) was a brave Russian nurse. She helped many soldiers during a big war called the Crimean War. Yekaterina worked with another important person, Nikolay Pirogov, to help start modern nursing in Russia.
She became a nurse after Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna asked for volunteers. Yekaterina went to Crimea to care for injured soldiers. She was known for her kindness and for leading other volunteer nurses.
People often compare her to Florence Nightingale. Florence was also a volunteer nurse during the Crimean War, but for the British army. Yekaterina did so much for nursing, just like Florence. This is why Yekaterina was sometimes called the "Russian Nightingale."
