The Submarine's Beginning
The Yellow Submarine was built by about 80 young workers. They were apprentices from a shipyard called Cammell Laird. A designer named Mr. L Pinch helped create its look. It was made for the International Garden Festival in Liverpool in 1984.
A Special Garden
The Submarine was placed in a garden that celebrated The Beatles. This was one of 60 special gardens at the festival. The Beatles garden was shaped like an apple and had a maze inside. It also featured a bronze statue of John Lennon, one of The Beatles. This statue is now at Liverpool John Lennon Airport. The Submarine and its garden were very popular with visitors.
What the Submarine Looks Like
This model submarine is quite large! It is about 51 feet (15.62 meters) long. It stands about 15 feet (4.57 meters) high. The whole structure weighs 18 tons, which is very heavy.
Inside the Submarine
The Yellow Submarine is made of strong steel. Inside, it has a copy of a real submarine's control room. It even has actual submarine equipment! There are two spiral staircases that lead up to the bridge. From the bridge, you could see a wide view of the garden. You could get inside through doors on the side. The outside is painted a bright, vivid yellow. It looks like it's tilted, ready to dive underwater.
The Submarine's Journey
After the International Garden Festival closed, the Yellow Submarine moved. For several years, it was in Chavasse Park. This is an open area in the center of Liverpool. It was easy for people driving into the city to see it there.
A New Home
Over time, the Submarine started to show wear and tear. It was taken out of public view to be fixed up. In 2005, it got a brand new home. It was moved to Liverpool John Lennon Airport. The airport boss, Neil Pakey, was very proud. He said, "Other airports have the Concorde, we have the Yellow Submarine." It's a unique and fun landmark for the airport.
