Liverpool John Lennon Airport is a big international airport in Liverpool, England. It sits right next to the River Mersey. Every year, about 5 million people travel through this airport!

It first opened way back in 1930. This makes it one of the oldest airports in the UK, especially outside of London. Over the years, it has changed a lot.

Airport History

Early Days and Growth

When the airport first opened in 1930, it was called Speke Airport. It was a very important place for air travel in the north of England. In 1966, a longer runway was built. This new runway was perfect for bigger, faster jet airplanes.

New Buildings and a New Name

In 1986, a brand new building for passengers opened. This new terminal made traveling much easier and more modern. The old airport building was later turned into a hotel. Today, it is known as the Crowne Plaza Liverpool Airport Hotel.

A very special change happened in 2001. The airport was renamed Liverpool John Lennon Airport. It was named after John Lennon, who was a famous musician from The Beatles. He was born in Liverpool.

Getting to the Airport

To make it easier for people to get to and from the airport, a new train station opened in 2006. This station is called Liverpool South Parkway. It connects the airport to many train lines. This means travelers can easily reach the airport by train.
