About the Yellow Longbill
The yellow longbill is a medium-sized bird. It is about 13 cm (5 inches) long from its beak to its tail. It usually weighs between 11 and 16 grams. This bird has a short tail and a long, straight black beak. The tip of its beak has a small hook.
Its eyes are yellow. The feathers on its belly are greenish-yellow. The top of its head is dark olive-gray. Its back and wings are dark olive-green. Some loose feathers on its back and rump have a yellow tint. Male and female yellow longbills look similar, but males are usually a bit bigger. These birds typically live for about 3.6 years.
Where Yellow Longbills Live
Yellow longbills live in forests that are warm and wet. They prefer lowland forests, which are found in lower and middle areas. These forests can be untouched or areas where trees have been cut down. They also live near forest edges and clearings.
These lowland habitats can be as high as 1000-1400 meters in Uganda. In the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, they can live up to 1800 meters high.
You can find yellow longbills in many countries in Africa. These include Angola, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Nigeria, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.
There are different types, or subspecies, of the yellow longbill:
- The Macrosphenus flavicans flavicans lives in parts of Nigeria, Bioko, Cameroon, and Angola.
- The Macrosphenus flavicans hypochondriacus lives in areas like the Central African Republic, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, and Tanzania.
What Yellow Longbills Eat
Yellow longbills are omnivores, which means they eat both animals and plants. Their main diet includes spiders and insects. They enjoy eating moths, caterpillars, and beetles. They also eat some fruit.
These birds often look for food in pairs or in family groups. Sometimes, they even join groups with other bird species. They usually search for food in thick, tangled plants close to the ground. During the dry season, they might also look for food higher up in the trees.
Protecting Yellow Longbills
The yellow longbill is currently classified as a species of least concern. This means that experts believe it is not globally threatened. This assessment was made on October 1, 2016.
Yellow longbills are common in many parts of their habitat. There are two separate groups of these birds living in the forests of West and Central Africa.
Not many special actions are in place to protect the yellow longbill. There are no specific research or monitoring programs for them. However, some land and water areas where they live are protected. There are no specific plans for managing the species or educating people about them.
