Yeshimabeit "Yeshi" Milner is an American expert in technology and a person who works for social change. She is the main leader and co-founder of an organization called Data for Black Lives.

Early Life and Education

Yeshimabeit Milner, also known as Yeshi, grew up in Miami, Florida. When she was a teenager, she started working to make positive changes in society. She also became interested in data science, which is about using information to understand things.

As a high school senior, Yeshi worked with an organization called the Power U Center for Social Change. After high school, she went to Brown University. She graduated in 2012 with a degree in Africana Studies.

Career and Impact

After college, in 2013, Yeshi returned to Miami. She continued working with the Power U Center for Social Change. She started looking into why the rate of Black infant deaths was so high in her local area.

Understanding Data for Change

Yeshi and her team collected information from 300 mothers. By understanding this data, they were able to help change local rules and policies. This work showed how powerful data can be when used to help communities.

Founding Data for Black Lives

In November 2017, Yeshi Milner and Lucas Mason-Brown, a mathematician she knew from Brown University, started Data for Black Lives (D4BL). They wanted to use data to help Black communities.

Their main idea is "Abolish Big Data!" This means they want to change how large amounts of data are used. They believe data should be used to help people, especially those who need it most.

Important Projects

Since 2018, D4BL has held an annual conference. In 2020, the group gathered important information about how the COVID-19 pandemic affected Black people in different states. They are also working to create a national database. This database will show what technologies police departments across the country are using.

In 2021, Yeshi Milner helped write a research paper for Demos. This paper discussed "algorithmic racism." This happens when technology companies use computer programs that unfairly treat people based on their race.

Awards and Recognition

Yeshi Milner has been recognized for her important work. She was on the board of the Highlander Research and Education Center in Tennessee.

In 2018, she received a Roddenberry Foundation Fellowship. This award is given to amazing people who are working to make the world a better place. In 2020, Data for Black Lives and its founders were honored by Forbes 30 Under 30. They also received a New York Times 2020 Good Tech Award.
