Yiyili is a small Aboriginal community in Western Australia. It is about 110 kilometers (68 miles) west of Halls Creek. Yiyili is located in the beautiful Kimberley area. It is part of the Shire of Halls Creek.

The Story of Yiyili

The Yiyili community started in 1981. This happened when the Louis Downs Pastoral Aboriginal Corporation bought Louisa Downs Station. The community was built on land that was separated from the station's pastoral lease. A pastoral lease is like renting a large area of land for farming animals. Today, Louisa Station is still owned and run by people from the Yiyili community. They manage it through the Louisa Downs Pastoral Aboriginal Corporation.

Native Title and Land

The Yiyili community is located within a special area. This area is part of the registered Gooniyandi Combined 2 native title claim. Native title means that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have rights to their traditional lands and waters. These rights come from their traditional laws and customs.

Learning at Yiyili

Children who live in Yiyili go to the Yiyili Community School. This school teaches students from kindergarten all the way up to Year 10. The school welcomes children from Yiyili and other nearby communities. These nearby places are called outstations. Some of these outstations include Ganinyi, Girriyoowa, Goolgaradah, Kurinyjarn, and Rocky Springs.

In 2010, there were 72 students at the school. A school bus picks up students every day from other communities. For example, it picks up students from Moongardie, which is 30 kilometers (19 miles) away. The school also provides lunch for all its students. After Year 10, students often go to boarding schools. These schools are in bigger towns like Darwin, Northern Territory.

How Yiyili is Managed

The Yiyili community is managed by a group called the Yiyili Community Indigenous Corporation. This group used to be known as the Yiyili Community Aboriginal Corporation. It was officially set up on November 27, 1981. This was done under a law called the Aboriginal Councils and Associations Act 1976. This law helps Aboriginal groups manage their own communities.
