Yngve Axel Andreas Larsson (born January 9, 1917 – died March 22, 2014) was a Swedish doctor. He specialized in helping children, which is called a pediatrician. He also became a professor and an expert in diabetes, known as a diabetologist.
Early Life and Education
Yngve Larsson was born in Stockholm, Sweden. He was the fifth child in his family. His father, also named Yngve Larsson, was a Stockholm vice mayor. His mother, Elin Larsson, came from a family of publishers.
Yngve Larsson studied at Uppsala University. He earned a special high-level degree called a Ph.D. from Karolinska Institute in 1956. This degree showed he had done important research.
Helping Children in Ethiopia
From 1964, Yngve Larsson worked in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia. He worked for the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency. This agency helps other countries develop. He started as a professor.
From 1965 to 1970, he led the Ethio-Swedish Pediatric Clinic (ESPC). This clinic was part of Haile Selassie I University. It helped many children get medical care.
His wife, Ulla Larsson, was also a pediatrician. She started a clinic nearby called the Lideta Maternal and Child Health Center. This clinic helped mothers and children. It was funded by the Swedish part of Save the Children, a group that helps kids worldwide.
Fighting Diabetes
In the 1970s, Yngve Larsson returned to Sweden. He worked at Linköping University in Linköping. There, he was in charge of studying and treating diabetes. He also started important research about diabetes across Sweden.
He was very active in a group called the International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD). This group focuses on diabetes in young people. He was part of their advisory team from 1981 to 1984.
Later Years
Yngve Larsson retired in 1983. However, he continued to work for several years. He worked with the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare. This board helps manage health care in Sweden.
He passed away on March 22, 2014, in Lidingö, Sweden. He was 97 years old.
