Ynysgau Chapel was a very old chapel in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales. It started way back in 1749. People met there for services, and they spoke the Welsh language. Sadly, the chapel was taken down in 1967. This happened because of a big plan to improve the town of Merthyr.

The Chapel's Beginnings

The first group of people who started Ynysgau Chapel were called 'Dissenters'. These were people who didn't agree with the main Church of England. By the early 1800s, the chapel was taken over by a group called the Independents. They were also known as Congregationalists, a type of Protestant Christian group.

Building a New Chapel

A brand new chapel building was constructed in the 1850s. It officially opened its doors on Easter Sunday in 1854. People at the time said the new building was "very beautiful." It had special coloured glass windows. This was the last building used for the chapel before it was demolished.

Nearby Bridges

Right in front of the chapel were two important bridges. The first was the Old Iron Bridge, built in 1800. Later, the Ynsgau Bridge was built in 1880. Both of these bridges were also taken down in 1963. This was part of the same big project to improve the river and roads that led to the chapel's demolition.
