The Yon Mound and Village Site (also known as 8LI2) is an old archaeological site in Florida. It's located near Bristol, Florida, right by the Apalachicola River. This place was once home to people from the Fort Walton culture, who were part of the larger Mississippian culture. The site was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1978 because it's an important historical spot.

Exploring the Yon Mound Site

This ancient site is found in northwest Florida, in the middle of the Apalachicola River valley. People first lived here for a short time around 320 CE. This was during what archaeologists call the Swift Creek culture period.

Who Lived Here?

Around 1200 CE, a new group of people arrived. They belonged to the Middle Fort Walton period of the Fort Walton culture. These people built a special platform mound and a village around it. A platform mound is a large, flat-topped hill made by people, often used for important buildings or ceremonies. It's thought these people were connected to those at the Cayson Mound and Village Site.

Later, during a time called the protohistoric period, another group lived here. These were the Lamar phase people. They moved down the Chattahoochee-Apalachicola River. This might have happened after Europeans first arrived in the early 1500s.

Discovering the Past

The Yon Mound and Village Site was first recorded and dug up by Clarence Bloomfield Moore. He was an archaeologist who explored the area in the early 1900s. His work helped us learn about the ancient people who lived here.
