York Cottage

York Cottage is a special house located on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, England. It was once the home of a future king and queen of the United Kingdom, King George V and Queen Mary, when they were known as the Duke and Duchess of York. Today, the cottage is used as an office for the Sandringham Estate and also provides homes for people who work there, as well as holiday places for visitors.

A Royal Home

York Cottage became an important royal residence after Prince George, who later became King George V, married Princess Mary of Teck in 1893. The couple lived there for many years while Prince George was the Duke of York. This was before he became king in 1910. The house was a quiet family home for them and their children.

Life at York Cottage

While living at York Cottage, Prince George and Princess Mary raised their family. It was a more private and less formal setting compared to some of the larger royal palaces. They enjoyed country life on the Sandringham Estate. This period helped shape their lives before they took on the bigger responsibilities of being the King and Queen of the United Kingdom.

York Cottage Today

After King George V and Queen Mary moved to other royal residences, York Cottage continued to be part of the Sandringham Estate. It now serves several purposes. The main part of the building is used as the Estate Office. This is where the people who manage the Sandringham Estate work. Other parts of the cottage have been turned into apartments. These apartments are used by employees who work for the royal family on the estate. Some sections are also available for people to rent as holiday homes. This allows visitors to experience a piece of royal history.
