Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Yorktown is a small, quiet place in Tuscarawas County, which is located in the U.S. state of Ohio. It is known as an unincorporated community.

What is an Unincorporated Community?

An unincorporated community is a place that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or a village. Instead, it's usually part of a larger county. This means that services like police, fire, and roads are managed by the county government, not by a separate town council. Yorktown is one of these communities in Ohio.

A Look Back: Yorktown's History

Yorktown has a short but interesting history. Back in 1881, a special building called a post office was opened there. A post office is where people send and receive letters and packages. This post office helped the people living in Yorktown stay connected to others. However, it only stayed open for a few years, closing in 1884.

Besides the post office, Yorktown was also important because it had a station for the Marietta and Pittsburgh Railroad. Railroads were a very big deal in the past! They were how people traveled long distances and how goods were moved from one place to another. Having a train station meant that Yorktown was a stopping point for trains, connecting it to other towns and cities.
