Discovering Yorktown's Homes
The Yorktown neighborhood has 19 blocks filled with homes for single families. Even though it has eight different sections, many houses share similar styles. Building homes in Yorktown really started in 1921.
Popular House Styles
The most common type of house you'll see in Yorktown is the Bungalow/Craftsman style. About 69% of all houses in the area are built this way. These homes often have a cozy, handcrafted look.
The second most popular style is Tudor Revival. These houses became popular in the late 1920s. They often look like old English cottages with steep roofs and decorative wood. Together, these two styles make up 90% of all homes in Yorktown!
Why Yorktown is a Historic Place
In 2000, experts looked at 449 properties in the Yorktown District. They found that most of them, about 90.6%, were "contributing" to the district's historic feel. This means they still looked much like they did when they were first built.
What Makes a Home "Contributing"?
A home is "contributing" if it keeps its original look and is old enough to be considered historic. Other properties might not be "contributing" if they were changed a lot or were not old enough. To be listed as historic, a building usually needs to be at least 50 years old.
Joining the National Register
Yorktown was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 20, 2002. This means it's recognized as an important historic area in the United States. Its special number is 02000657.
